Studio Beerhorst - St Francis

We are an artist family of eight working in various media, painting, wood cut prints, textile arts, and soft sculptures. We are urban homesteading in downtown Grand Rapids Michigan with back yard chickens and a large organic garden. We support ourselves entirely by the art we make and sell, parents and children working together.

The art historian in me adores these prints while my inner Italianophile can't wait to hang this lovely little memory of Assisi on my living room wall. Over this past summer I went on the trip of a life-time: An entire month in Florence and Rome. We went on a few other day trips while there to places such as Chianti, Sienna and of course, Assisi. Assisi is a gorgeous little hill city that is now centered around the Franciscan Order and the Order of St. Clare. Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the men's Franciscan Order, the women’s Order of St. Clare, and the lay Third Order of Saint Francis. St. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. He is known as the patron saint of animals, the environment and one of the two patrons of Italy. Assisi is a truly beautiful city, that even for non-Catholics like myself, is also an intensely spiritual place.

So not only is this a gorgeous modernization of a traditional Catholic Saint but the memory of St Francis of Assisi will always hold a special place in my heart. Catholics, animal lovers, artists and historians alike would be delighted to unwrap this as a present!
